Manchester Art Gallery by Zaha Hadid
Under the International Music Festival in Manchester, and in order to host a series of nine concerts of Johann Sebastian Bach, the study of architecture of Zaha Hadid has built a temporary pavilion at the Manchester Art Gallery. The facility will be open from July 3 until 31 August. This project has successfully transformed, both visually and acoustically, an open space and orthogonal for the display in another intimate and appropriate for hearing chamber music. According to Hadid’s own words “the project seeks to design a coherent integration between the music of Bach and a formal structure of logic. In this sense, a single continuous strip of tissue, turning on itself, creating intimate spaces while fluids that collect both the musicians and the audience. ” The initial space, an exhibition gallery with the traditional room-box, is converted into a dynamic and enveloping shell.
For the construction of the facility, have been taken into account not only architectural aspects such as scale and structure but also the acoustic aspects. Thus, Johann Sebastian Bach flag consists of a translucent fabric membrane articulated by an internal steel frame suspended from the ceiling. The membrane creates a undulating shell-paced constantly changing as is stressed by the internal structure. Visually imperceptible acoustic panels are suspended above the stage to relax and disperse the sound, leaving the shell to take all the visual prominence. The facility is designed to be transported and reinstalled in other similar areas.
