Fifty years after its construction, which was the largest center of political and cultural life of the USSR from the ’60s, has been remodeled with the most advanced acoustic and visual techniques to become one of the best auditoriums in the world. The Russian study of architects Otash has been in charge of this project.
Built in 1961 during the Khrushchev era, the auditorium was conceived as a modern extension of the Kremlin where they hold conferences and congresses of the Communist Party, in addition to all performances and concerts. The building of concrete, glass and steel, a giant of 5 floors and 800 rooms, was considered one of the greatest technical achievements of the Soviet era. The basic concept of computer architecture has been preserved all that was possible from the existing geometry of the building and apply the latest audio and visual technologies in collaboration with experts from Britain, the United States and Germany.
By using LED lighting panels were integrated into the walls to create the effect of large screens, and so everything inside the stage experience participating in, allowing the director some interesting possibilities in the conceptualization of the work. The application of new acoustic solutions to interior design has been the main challenge of the project as they have covered all surfaces with acoustic panels specially designed for the occasion. The addition of these perforated panels give a final appearance significantly to the concert hall, considered today as one of the most technologically advanced concert halls in the world.
Officially renamed in 1992 as the Kremlin’s State Palace, the Congress still has a part of public building next to the large concert hall, which occupies most of the building.
